Setting Up the Canvas

  • Start with a new canvas, preferably square (2048 x 2048 pixels) with a DPI of 300. This dimension works well for Instagram, so that’s why I choose it. Dimension isn’t as important as the DPI you want a minimum of 300!

Sketching the Frog

  • Use a pencil or dry ink brush for sketching. Draw a simple oval for the lily pad and another for the frog’s body.
  • To create a chubby frog, add a chunkier oval for the lower part of the body and connect them, giving it a kidney bean shape.
  • Define the legs by sketching ovals that resemble knee and foot sections.
  • Sketch the frog’s eyes as circles, ensuring they are roughly the same size.
  • Draw a little mouth to give your frog character.
  • Add small feet to the bottom of the frog, as it sits on the lily pad.

Cute Cheeks and Sprout

  • Enhance cuteness by giving the frog big cheeks.
  • Add a little sprout on top of the frog’s head for extra charm.
  • Create circular glasses around the frog’s eyes. Ensure they’re slightly tilted to match the frog’s perspective.
  • Add lens details inside the frames if you like as well.

Completing the Lily Pad

  • Sketch a heart-shaped leaf above the frog. Start with an oval and then form the heart shape. Delete unnecessary lines.

Inking and Coloring

  • Create a new layer for inking. Start with the frog’s face and work your way down.
  • Once inked, remove the sketch layer.

Coloring the Frog

  • Choose your colors for the frog, lily pad, and leaf. I have included my colours in HEX format below.
  • Apply the base color to the frog, making it a shade of green.
  • Add white or light green for the belly and pink for the cheeks.

Hex Colours: OUTLINE – #A76952 BACKGROUND – #FFF6E4 CIRCLE – #BAE8F8 FROG BASE – #C3D9A1 BELLY – #C0DCD8 HIGHLIGHT – #C0DCD8 OVERLAY SHADOW – #C3D9A1 MULTIPLY TEXTURE – #97D1CE CHEEKS – #EF8A98 LEAF & LILY PAD BASE – #97D1CE HIGHLIGHT – #C0DCD8 OVERLAY SHADOW – #C3D9A1 MULTIPLY TEXTURE – #C0DCD8 MULTIPLY

Shading and Texture

  • Create a new layer for shading (apply multiply blending mode) and add shading to the frog’s body.
  • Add some texture by using a textured brush on the multiply layer, adjusting the opacity as needed.
  • Optionally, add some subtle highlights.

Background and Final Touches

Consider changing the background color to complement your artwork. – Add a simple circle or shape around the frog for a finishing touch.

And there you have it – your adorable frog on a lily pad! Remember, you can experiment with colors, shading, and textures to make your artwork unique. Don’t forget to share your creations on Instagram and tag me at @bpinkeedoodles. I love seeing your artwork!
